By Amber Parsons
Bio-
Amber Parsons is a recent graduate from James Madison University with a concentration in Cultural Communications. She minored in Anthropology and Women and Gender Studies. She participated in a 3 week long intensive study abroad program in Ireland during the summer of 2023. She visited Dublin, Derry/Londonderry, and Galway during the program. Over the course of her studies, she learned about "the Troubles" of Northern Ireland and the importance of how different places can help shape stories and identities. Through her unique perspective as an American woman with no prior knowledge in Irish history, she began to develop her own understanding of "the Troubles" and learned more about her own identity throughout the process.Â
About-
This page highlights 3 major sites explored during the study abroad program, with stories alongside each site to help highlight the significance it has to understanding culture in Ireland. These 3 stories put together help emphasize the larger, overarching theme of division in Ireland. Being able to make sense of place within the conflict is crucial to being able to understand Irish culture as it is today.
